Where Should You Build Your Own Greenhouse?
Once you’ve made the decision to build your own greenhouse, the logical next question is where you want to put it. The answer can vary considerably, depending on how large you want your greenhouse to be, what materials you want to build it out of, and what space you have available.
Attached to your house: The Lean-To Greenhouse
One idea which is often overlooked, but which is ideal for many people (especially if you’ve never built a greenhouse before), is building a lean-to greenhouse. A lean-to greenhouse can be constructed against an existing wall of your house or garage. They are commonly built off the rear of a home, but there is no reason they can’t be built off other walls if desired. The advantage of sharing a wall with your home can result in lower greenhouse construction cost and save money in heating your greenhouse.
Free standing but in close proximity to your house
Another idea to consider is building your own greenhouse directly outside your back door, where you might otherwise expect to find a patio. Besides the fact that your vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers will be easier to reach during times of harsh weather, many people find that having their own lean-to greenhouse directly behind their home affords them a nice place to relax. Your greenhouse can be teeming with colorful plant life even when everything is cold and dreary outside, offering a welcome contrast during those long cold winter months.
Whether you build an attached greenhouse or a free standing greenhouse, it is important to build it in an area that gets a lot of sun. Look for a place in your yard that is south facing that will not get shading from your house or from trees.
